Maybe so, but reading is even better!

Later this week the town will no doubt be painted green in honour of the Patron Saint of Ireland.

Did you know Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival?

Did you also know that four Irish writers have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature- WB Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney?

We can’t comment on the truth behind the claim made in the iconic advert for Guinness, but what we do know for sure is that reading IS good for you.

Plenty of choice!

Here at Jesmond Library we invite you to join in St Patrick’s Day celebrations by taking a peek at some of the many excellent books we have available written by Irish writers, including: Maeve Binchy, Roddy Doyle, Seamus Heaney, James Joyce, Marian Keyes, CS Lewis, Bram Stoker, Colm Toibin, William Trevor, and Oscar Wilde.

And if you’re interested in learning more about Nobel Prize winning poet Seamus Heaney, there is still time to catch the last two sessions in the excellent series of talks given by Pamela Woolf:

10.30am on Monday 11th and Monday 25th March here at Jesmond Library.*
