Volunteers’ Week

Volunteers’ Week is an annual UK-wide campaign held from the first Monday in June to celebrate and recognise the contributions of volunteers.

This year’s celebration runs from Monday 2nd – Sunday 8th June.

What is Volunteers’ Week?

Launched in 1984, this initiative has been running for over 40 years, providing organisations and communities a platform to thank current and past volunteers for their invaluable efforts.

The campaign highlights the diversity and unity of volunteer work across the UK. In its 40th year, the campaign underwent a rebrand, introducing a vibrant identity to inspire continued engagement.

Volunteers’ Week celebrates the spirit of volunteering that enriches communities each year.

Jesmond Library Volunteers

Jesmond Library has been entirely volunteer run for 12 years. We currently have over 110 active volunteers. The most visible are those who work at the Library front desk greeting visitors and issuing books. They allow us to open the Library four days of the week for book borrowing, as a place to relax with newspapers and coffee, or a space to work and study.

But volunteers continue working even when the Library is not open. We have many more people helping out in all areas: running interest and language conversation classes; maintaining the building; planning major projects; advising on which books to buy; organising events; working with children; working with the older generation; taking room bookings and opening for these.

Thank you!

Jesmond Library would not be here today without our volunteers, past and present.

A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to you all!
