Local History and Local Interest Collection

During the recent Jesmond Community Festival we asked our volunteers to select books specifically about Jesmond from our Local Interest collection.

The resulting table display received a positive response from our borrowers.

Many of the books showcased were borrowed throughout the Festival period.

So we thought we would highlight just some of the many other books we have available in the Local Interest Collection – which covers more than just Jesmond!

What’s included?

In brief, the collection incorporates all books, pamphlets, maps, guides and literature we have about Newcastle, Northumberland, Durham and the rest of Tyne and Wear.

And it’s not just history.

The collection covers all topics (Dewey 0 – 999): from football to pottery; from cooking to transport; from literature to industry; from gardens to castles. And there is so much more.

Most of the books are available for 4 week loan like the rest of the Library stock.

More fragile or unusual items are made available for reference use only.

Do come and check them out!

Local Studies

If you are interested in carrying out further research beyond what we at Jesmond Library can offer, Newcastle City Library has an extensive Local Studies and Family History department, together with Special Collections available on request.

However, many of their resources can also be accessed online using the People’s Network Computer terminals at Jesmond Library.

And in some cases, City Library books can be ordered for collection from Jesmond Library.

You can find out more about the City Library collection here.

Donations

Meanwhile our own collection continues to grow and we gratefully accept interesting books about the northeast and its people. If you have something you think would complement the existing collection please have a word with one of our volunteers.
