For the August challenge, as part of the Library’s engagement in the National Year of Reading, we decided on a comic theme. Because reading can be more than just books.

Like many children of my generation, I grew up reading comics. I eagerly awaited the next edition of Bunty to find out what exciting adventure the Four Marys would have that week. My brother and I fought to be the first to read Look and Learn. My father continued to buy the Rover which my brother and I read too.

Sadly weekly paper comics with serialised story lines have fallen out of favour, perhaps overtaken by the more sophisticated (but sometimes just brash and noisy!) cartoons now available on screen and film.

Still, August allowed some of us the opportunity for a nostalgic trip back to the comics of our youth. There were two crosswords to complete. Congratulations to our two winners, drawn at random from correctly completed entries:
#NameThatComic – Martin Eccles
#ComicHero – Jonathan Clare
