Dyslexic Friendly Books – what a great idea!

At Jesmond Library we regularly add to our children’s collection of books.  We add new titles, replace some well loved favourites and our latest addition has been to have some Dyslexic Friendly Books on our shelves.

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that primarily affects reading and related language-based processing skills. Children with Dyslexia find it more difficult to read words accurately and fluently, have problems decoding words and frequently guess or misread words.

What makes a book Dyslexic Friendly?

Dyslexic Friendly Books use fonts which are designed to be easier to read – Arial or Comic Sans, the text is slightly larger, increased spacing between lines of text and words, shorter paragraphs, generous margins, plain language with predictable text structure.  If appropriate, using images and illustrations.

These features help dyslexic readers by reducing visual stress, making the text more accessible, and enhancing comprehension and engagement with the story books.

We are delighted to start this collection of Dyslexic Friendly Books at Jesmond Library and we will be adding more to our collection in August and in the future on a regular basis as more books become available from publishers.

Any requests?

If there are any special book requests – please let us know as we are always keen to stock books which our users will enjoy reading.
