This Monday, 15th July, it is the feast day of St Swithin (Swithun), the 9th century Bishop of Winchester.

British folklore holds that if rain falls on Winchester Bridge on 15th July, it will be a sign of the weather to follow for the next 40 days.

St Swithun’s day if thou dost rain

For forty days it will remain

St Swithun’s day if thou be fair

For forty days ’twill rain nae mare

Today’s Winchester forecast suggests that sunshine will prevail!

However, if you prefer your weather knowledge to be more scientific, we have some very interesting and relevant books in the library.

Come and check them out.

On the subject of weather conditions, plans are in place to begin a process of replacing the library’s windows.

The new frames are designed to keep us warmer in the cold weather, cooler in the hot weather, and of course to stop the rain getting in!

Work will begin later this summer. Please bear with us during any upheaval.
